There's a few reasons, really.
He'd never really bothered learning how to converse with people outside of those he already knew, not unless he absolutely had to. His fellow Dragoons more or less understood--most of them had gone through the same things he had, and they all had their own ways of dealing with it. Then with his position, people had tried to curry favor with him and he found it exhausting and infuriating by turns. Then when he'd refused to play their games, or was forced to and made a single misstep, they'd turned to vicious harpies.
It's easier to just not, rather than try to find the words to explain all that.]
